I hunted through the paper for the continuation of the story and found it under a three-column photo of the skull taken the night of its unveiling in Santa Fe. O'Keeffe, the most admired American woman painter in history, gained early recognition when her works were shown at the New York gallery of Albert Stieglitz, a leading proponent of modernist painting. But O'Keeffe later became associated with Southwest themes and images. She lived most of the last fifty years of her life in northwestern New Mexico, where this previously unknown painting was discovered earlier this year.
